Food Security Women Sell Out at Food Fair in Retalhuleu

On Sunday October 5th, Jennifer Brito, Haley Kirk, and six women from the community Santa Fe La Presa woke up bright and early to participate in the Agroecology and Nutrition Fair held by the Catholic Health Ministry in Retalhuleu. The event took place in the central park in front of the Catholic Church and ran from 6 in the morning until 12 in the afternoon. The goal of the event was to promote natural, organic, and nutritious products. The health ministry aims to combat malnutrition, end bad dietary habits like eating excessive junk food, and promote growing nutritious food within the home.

When we first proposed the idea to the women they were hesitant to sign on. It would mean getting on a bus at 5:30 in the morning after getting up early to prepare the food. Then they would have to explain the nutritional properties of the food they were selling. However, it only took one woman to say yes for the rest to sign on. Once they were decided it quickly shifted from a daunting task to an exciting opportunity.  They chatted among themselves and decided who would prepare what for the event.

Dina made tostadas with pigeonpea. Angelina sold a hot pigeonpea drink and bundles of chaya leaves. Maylin prepared pigeon flour. Lucia sold glasses of horchata and horchata mix. Simona made tamalitos with chaya and QPM and Herminia made tamalitos with pigeonpea and QPM.

Before the women could even set up shop, Angelina had a line of people waiting for her to serve atol, and it sold out in half an hour. The hot, thick drink is often oatmeal or corn based with cinnamon and sugar. However, the atol Angelina served was made from pigeonpea, meaning it was packed with protein! In many families breakfast may only consist of a cup of atol and a piece of bread to dip in it. Atol made from pigeonpea would mean everyone starting their day off better, staying fuller longer, and for kids, being able to focus more in school. Because everyone liked the atol so much, many picked up a bag of pigeonpea flour made by Maylin so that they could make their own at home.

As Angelina pockets the last bit of cash she made from her sales, the rest of the group smiles for a photo behind the stand.

As the event went on, it was obvious to see that this was an area where the women shined. Guatemalans have a knack for salesmanship. They were quick to answer questions about the nutritional properties of Quality Protein Maize, chaya, and pigeonpea. They also answered questions about how to produce pigeonpea and chaya. Many of the farmers interested in planting pigeonpea were excited to learn that it grows easily during the dry season and that it can be planted in between exisiting sesame crops. Semilla Nueva sold 10 pounds of pigeonpea to interested farmers.

One of the women, Dina, was especially gifted at handling customers and explaining the benefits of the various ingredients they incorporated in the food. When asked a question about QPM she hesitated and gave a sideways look at Jennifer who was already in another discussion. However, she looked back to the customer and accurately explained the nutritional benefits and the fact that it is cared for in the same way as conventional corn.

Dina said, “the event was excellent and we were able to share everything we’ve learned with Jennifer.” She was able to make Q50 that morning. Although 50 quetzales only amount to 7 US dollars, it usually takes a full day of field work under the hot sun to make the same amount. She said she would gladly participate in the event again. “People were impressed by all of the natural products that we had. They’ve never seen them before. It motivates us to keep participating in the group.”

Jennifer Brito, our Food Security Coordinator, discusses with the women a proposition they received halfway through the day. After seeing how successful the sales of pigeonpea flour were, Casa Fátima, a shop supported by the Health Ministry, asked if the women of Santa Fe would be willing to sell their products at the store. This would mean pigeonpea would not only be an additional source of food in the home but also an additional source of income.

Towards the end of the event, when the sun was blazing down on the park, Lucia was quickly doling out ice-cold pigeonpea horchata. After selling out of the last of the drinks the women closed shop. It was a successful and exciting day. Events like this give the women in our communities the opportunity to recognize the value in the technologies we are introducing and the foods they are producing. Many development projects focus so narrowly on the environmental or nutritional benefits that the realities of economic necessities are forgotten. This fair married the two concepts, showing nutritious and environmentally friendly products can be profitable.

We were excited to find out that the event is held three times throughout the year in different locations. The next Agroecology Fair will be held in the Suchitepéquez area, meaning we will be able to invite women from another community to come and share their products.
