Partner Communities

Semilla Nueva works with rural farming communities of Guatemala that have an already present motivation to engage in sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. In Guatemala, we have found this motivation to be consistently present within most communities because farmers rely on the health of their soil and agroecosystems to their livlihoods and sustenance. Though this desire and spark is nearly ubiquitous, different communities are at a diverse stages of self-organization and development. Some communities already have well established promotores and/or cuardras while others are just beginning to explore possibilities.

Semilla Nueva thus tailors its efforts to match the needs of each community depending on a community’s current stage of organization and development. For more organized and unified communities, there is less of an emphasis on mobilization and the facilitation of information sharing because channels of communication are already well established. In contrast, for communities with nascent organizational structures and sustainable agriculture development, it is important to emphasize community leadership, organization, and participation. By taking a flexible and open approach to our work, we are able to tailor our activities such that we effectively augment a community’s current efforts and empower them with the appropriate tools, knowledge, expertise, and assistance.
