  • 76% of Guatemala’s poor depend on the agricultural sector for their livelihoods. Many raise subsistence crops on marginal lands (USAID 2010)

  • 79% of Guatemala’s cropland is severely degraded (FAO 2008)

  • Dollar for dollar, investing in smallholder farmers is the most effective way to boost the economies of developing countries, increase food and livelihood security for the most vulnerable, and combat climate change. (Farming First 2010)
