Farmer to Farmer

The solutions to these problems are largely present - the key is to bring them together.

There is the technology: Research institutions around the world have found simple changes in growing methods that can reverse environmental degradation while raising farmers' incomes.

It can be efficiently brought to farmers:
Nonprofits and governments from India to Malawi, and from Brazil to Mexico, have found low-cost methods to help farmers learn and share these techniques.

The farmers are ready: Farmers in Guatemala are eager to experiment and to adopt new practices, provided they are given long-term assistance and guidance.

In our partner communities, Semilla Nueva is providing the missing link. We bring the best technology from the world's leading agriculture research institutions to poor farmers. We do this through a collaborative methodology called the farmer to farmer approach. Community volunteers, called promoters, work with Semilla Nueva staff to try new growing technologies on their land. After they see results, we provide them the tools to teach these same techniques to their neighbors. Farmers also receive the resource needed to form sustainable agriculture support groups where they can continue experimenting and sharing results with their community. Semilla Nueva is working to become a model of sustainable community-based development.
